Research Fellow / Postdoc (f/m/x) for 2 years at the newly established “Avicenna Study Center” (ASC)

The Institute of Arabic and Islamic Studies consists of two teams, one for Islamic Studies and one for Arabic Studies. The latter – led by Prof. Dr. Andreas Lammer – has a particular focus on the history of knowledge and recently founded a new center devoted to the academic investigation of the life, thought, and influence of the Muslim philosopher, physician, and scientist Avicenna (Ibn Sina). This new "Avicenna Study Center" (ASC) aims to bring together students, doctoral researchers, early career scholars, and senior colleagues, and provides an active environment for innovative research.

As a postdoctoral research associate (f/m/x) at the ASC, you will be based in Bochum and work under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Andreas Lammer. Your tasks will cover three main aspects: (1) you will serve as a science manager of the ASC and, in collaboration with its director, organise its internal structure and events; (2) you will further your own career by publishing and presenting your own research; and (3) you will develop and write one funding proposal for a research project on Avicenna per year. In case one of these projects is funded, you have a chance to receive a three year research position as a fellow of the ASC, carrying out the project.

Your tasks:

  • Developing the internal structure of the ASC in collaboration with the director of the center.
  • Communicating the center's agenda in appropriate academic networks, on social media, and via email.
  • Organising and carrying out its main activities and events.
  • Devising a research idea and developing it by writing a project proposal for a suitable funding agency.
  • Working on your own publications and expanding your expertise in the field.

Your profile:

  • You have a PhD in the history of philosophy and science in the Islamic world (Philosophy, Arabic Studies, Islamic Studies, or comparable), ideally with a focus on Avicenna, his philosophy, and the reception thereof.
  • You show versatility in working with philosophical texts in Arabic and are able to read, understand, translate, and interpret classical texts at a high level.
  • You have a good understanding of the field of the history of philosophy and science in the Islamic world and innovative research ideas which advance the state of the art.
  • You possess organisation sensitivity, are flexible, proactive and service-oriented, and have good social and communication skills.
  • You have an excellent command of English, both orally and in writing.

Further information:

The position is salaried and based on the collective agreement of the Länder (TV-L). If the personal and collective agreement requirements are met, the employee will receive pay grade E13 TV-L.
